What's new in Android Marshmallow?

Once you've upgraded your phone, you'll see the following improvements to the Android operating system and other apps on your phone.

Google Google Assistant

Search from anywhere! There’s no need to leave your current app to search for the info you need next. Google Assistant uses what’s on your screen to show you related info, and even suggests next steps. For example, when composing a text to invite a friend to a particular restaurant, touch & hold to see an info card about the restaurant (hours, ratings, distance away) and actions (open apps to navigate there or to view the menu).

Other examples:

  • Streaming a song with your phone? Touch & hold to see information about the song and band and check out a list of their upcoming concerts, all without interrupting the music.
  • Adding a new contact? Touch & hold to learn more about them.

Battery optimization

Marshmallow includes these battery-smart features:

  • Doze is an automatic battery-saving feature. You don't need to do anything to use it. When it detects you haven’t used your phone for a while, it reduces processes runing in the background and checks less frequently for less important updates. Calls and important messages still come through normally.
  • App Standby reduces battery drain by putting your seldom-used apps into a reduced activity state. You also don't need to do anything to use this either. But you can control which apps are affected.

You can now enable battery percentage to appear on the status bar icon to see exactly how much power remains from any screen.

App permissions

Manage app permissions more easily now. Permission requests now appear when you first use the app, making it clearer what the app accesses upon use. You can easily control app permissions, turning them on and off any time.

Other additions

  • Silence your phone: You can silence your ringer by pressing the Volume Down button.
  • Customize quick settings: You can now reorder and remove quick settings tiles.
  • App defaults: Easily set or clear default app settings from Settings > Apps.
  • Lock screen: Start a Google voice search from your lock screen. Swipe right.
  • Expandable storage: You can now use your SD card to fully extend device internal storage rather than just for media files. After inserting a new SD card in your phone, you set it up.
  • Text selection: Now when you select text, the cursor automatically selects whole words, making most selections more accurate. You can still slide the bars to select or deselect individual characters.
  • Sharing: Your phone now learns which sharing methods you use most frequently and places them at the top of your share options.
  • Reset network connections: If you’re having Wi-Fi, cellular data, or Bluetooth network problems, you can reset all network connections.

Things that went away

  • Downtime has been replaced with Do not disturb mode.
  • Any apps you moved to or installed on the SD card before upgrading will still run from the card after upgrading. But, you won't be able to move new apps to the card. You must format your card as internal storage before you can move new apps to the card.
  • Assist has been taken out of the Moto app and its features moved. Use Do not disturb to keep your phone quiet when you are sleeping or are in a meeting. You can still have your phone read your messages and calls out loud while you are driving or when you are at a specific location using Moto Voice.
  • The Migrate app is not available on phones that upgrade to Marshmallow. There are other methods for transferring your data.
