What's new in Android Nougat?

Once you've upgraded your phone, you'll see the following improvements to the Android operating system and other apps on your phone.

Productivity

Switch between apps: It’s easy to flip between your two most-recently used apps. Just touch twice.

Split screen: Use two apps at once with split screen view. Open your first app, then touch & hold to select a second app to use in the other half of your screen.

Work mode: If you use Android for Work, use the new Work mode toggle to conveniently turn on and off your phone’s work apps and related notifications.

Performance

Data Saver: Reduce cellular data usage and prevent overage charges. Turn Data Saver on to prevent apps running in the background from using cellular data. And adjust which apps have unrestricted access to cellular data.

Low power usage: Android Nougat improves Doze mode. Now your phone switches to lower power usage when you aren’t using it and the screen is off, even if you're on the move.

Just-in-time compiler: The new JIT compiler improves runtime performance, reduces the storage space required for apps, and makes app and system updates much faster.

Better notifications

Bundled notifications: Apps bundle all notifications together now, so you get more information and less wasted space. Touch the bundle to see each notification.

Direct reply: You no longer need to open an app to fire off a quick response. Now you can reply to a message directly from the notification.

Notification controls: When a notification arrives, just touch & hold it to adjust notification settings. For example, you can silence or block future notifications from that app.

Improved settings

Quicker quick settings: Swipe with one finger from the top of an unlocked screen to see the quick settings bar:

From there, touch to see all quick settings tiles.

Customizable quick settings: Rearrange your quick setting tiles so you can get to what you want faster.

Settings suggestions: In Settings, see suggestions for how to get even more out of your device. (To get rid of a suggestion, touch > Remove.)

Accessibility

Mono output: If you have hearing loss in one ear, you can combine stereo left and right channel output into a single mono stream.

Variable text to speech: You can now adjust the rate and pitch at which your phone speaks text.

Size of screen elements: You can now enlarge not only the font size, but also the display size of elements like icons and images.

Other improvements

  • Call blocking: If you don’t want to get calls or texts from a certain phone number, you can block it.
  • Wallpaper: Set wallpaper for your lock screen.
  • Multi-language support: Now you can select multiple languages in Settings, which means you’ll see search results in multiple languages and your phone won’t offer to translate web pages in a language you already know.
  • New and updated emoji: Bring your words to life with all-new emoji, including redesigned human emoji with multiple skin tones.
  • Emergency information: Now you can add criticial information such as name, blood type, allergies, and an emergency contact. Emergency responders can access this information from your lock screen.
