Use a timer

TipUse a tabletop tripod to stabilize the phone when taking timed shots.
  1. If you're taking a selfie, touch .
  2. Touch and choose 3s or 10s.
  3. Frame your shot, and when you're ready, touch to start the countdown.
  4. Take your place in the shot (if you're taking a selfie, simply wait) and smile!

Tap anywhere to capture

To touch anywhere on the screen instead of using :

  1. On the viewfinder, touch Settings.
  2. Turn Tap anywhere to capture on .

Show palm to take selfie

You can have the camera start a countdown timer to take a selfie by raising your palm.

To enable this gesture:

  1. Switch to the selfie camera by touching .
  2. On the viewfinder, touch Settings.
  3. Turn Gesture Selfie on .

To use it:

  1. Open the selfie camera.
  2. Without covering your face in the viewfinder, show your open hand (palm) to the camera.

    Three dots at the top of the viewfinder indicate a countdown timer.

  3. Smile and wait for the timer.

Use smile detection

You can have the camera automatically take a photo when it detects a smile.

For groups of two to five people, your camera will only take a photo when all detected faces are smiling.

  1. On the viewfinder, touch Settings.
  2. Turn Auto smile capture on .

    You'll see on the viewfinder.

Replace shutter with voice commands

Talk to your phone instead of touching or .

If you've set up the Google app to recognize your voice, say “OK, Google” and then say:

  • “Take a photo”
  • “Take a selfie”
  • “Record a video”
  • “Record a selfie video”

Turn shutter sound on/off

  1. On the viewfinder, touch Settings.
  2. Turn Shutter sound on or off .

Turn twist gesture on/off

Open your camera instantly from any screen, even your lock screen, with Quick capture.

  1. On the viewfinder, touch Settings.
  2. Turn Quick capture on or off .
  3. Select whether to open the rear camera or the selfie camera.
