Change resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio

Adjust resolution and frame rate

Resolution and frame rate impact different aspects of recording quality:

  • Resolution controls the sharpness and detail clarity in a video. It's the number of pixels in the image. The higher the resolution, the more pixels, giving sharper and more detailed images with larger file sizes.
  • Frame rate controls the smoothness of motion in a video. It's the number of frames per second that are captured.
Some options below may not be available on your phone.

Choose a video resolution based on your audience, delivery platform, and level of detail needed:

  • FHD (full HD): Video calls, mobile videos, general YouTube uploads, streaming
  • 4K: Professional content creation, product videos, virtual tours, TV shows

Choose frames per second (FPS) based on the action or movement you’re recording:

  • 30FPS: Dialogue-heavy content, documentaries, cinematic storytelling
  • 60FPS: Fast-paced content, tutorials with movement, sports highlights, gameplay videos

To change the resolution or FPS:

  1. Swipe the modes sideways to Video.
  2. Tap the current resolution.
  3. Select a resolution or FPS to suit the type of content you're filming:

Casual YouTube, streaming FHD at 30FPS or 60FPS
Content for mobile viewing FHD or 4K at 30FPS
Fast action, sports, gaming 4K or FHD at 60FPS
    High-end production 4K at 30FPS or 60FPS

Change shape of video frame for viewing

Aspect ratio determines the dimensions of the video frame. It's the proportional relationship between a video's width and height, shown as W:H (for example, 9:16).

For best results, select an aspect ratio to match the platform or device you'll be using for playback.

YouTube, TV, most streaming platforms 16:9 (widescreen)
TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts 9:16 (vertical)
Phone (full screen)
TipIf you're not sure where you'll post your content, shoot in 4K (or higher) and keep the subject centered. You can crop to 9:16 or 16:9 later without losing too much quality.

To change the aspect ratio before filming:

  1. Swipe the modes sideways to Video.
  2. Tap the current ratio and select the new ratio.

Reduce file size for streaming or sharing

Use Efficient videos to reduce file size while maintaining high quality video.

How it works

Efficient videos compresses and decompresses digital video signal using the HEVC (H.265) codec, short for coder-decoder, instead of the older AVC (H.264) codec, giving you:

  • Better compression – reduced file sizes by up to 50% with no significant quality loss
  • Improved streaming/sharing - smaller file sizes make it easier to upload, share, and stream videos

When to use it

Use Efficient videos when you:

  • Want to save storage space without sacrificing quality
  • Frequently upload videos and want faster uploads

Do not use it when:

  • You need maximum compatibility, since older devices and apps might not support HEVC
  • Your video editing software doesn’t support HEVC

Turn Efficient videos on/off

  1. In any mode, tap settings icon. If you don't see settings icon, tap overflow menu icon and then settings icon.
  2. Turn Efficient videos on or off
