Your phone periodically scans for available cellular networks and tries to connect to the fastest network it can use. But if you live or work in an area where the fastest network that your phone is capable of using is not available, you can stop the scans and conserve battery power by setting a network preference.
To set your network preference:
If you return to an area with a higher rate of service, repeat the process but select the faster network to restart scanning for the higher rate connection.
