Automate settings with Assist
Use Assist to automate your phone settings and responses when you’re driving, during events you've added to your calendar, when you're busy at home and want to be hands-free, and when you're sleeping.
You can customize Assist activities with your preferences:
- Sleeping. Set options to turn off ringtones and notifications for all calls or accept only important calls during the hours you specify. Alarms and media are not silenced.
- Driving. Set options to hear incoming text messages and the names of callers announced, and start music you last played. Control is hands-free. This activity requires GPS to be on, since driving motion activates it.
- Meeting. Set options to silence ringtones and notifications or switch to vibrate, accept only important calls, and send automatic text message replies to favorite contacts during calendar events. All-day events are not included.
- Home. Set options to read text messages and caller IDs aloud.

When Assist is active
When Assist is adjusting your phone settings, you’ll see an icon in the status bar with a notification, such as:
| Driving | |
| Home | |
| Meeting | |
| Sleeping | |
Assist uses sensors and rules to determine what you are doing and when to use your selected options. Occasionally you may want to temporarily stop using Assist settings. For example, if you are a passenger in a car or riding public transportation, Assist detects driving but cannot determine who is driving.
To temporarily stop using settings for the activity:
- Swipe the status bar down to view the notification.
- Touch "I’m not…" to indicate you're not doing the activity. (If you don’t see this option, drag the notification down with two fingers.) Your settings resume the next time you begin the activity.
To make changes to the activity's settings from the notification, touch it.
