Your phone periodically scans for available cellular networks and tries to connect to the fastest network it can use. But if you live or work in an area where the fastest network that your phone is capable of using is not available, you can stop the scans and conserve battery power by setting your network preference to use the fastest available network.

To set your network preference:

1. Drag the status bar down with two fingers and touch  Settings > More.
2. Touch Mobile networks > Network Mode > GSM/UMTS.

If you return to an area with a higher rate of service, repeat the process but select LTE/CDMA to restart scanning for the higher rate connection.
