Find what you need on the web or on your phone.

Search with the widget

To type your search term:

  1. Touch the Search widget.

  2. Start typing a search term.

    As you type, suggested terms appear below the text box.

  3. Touch a suggestion to search for it.

Search with your voice

Use voice commands to search without touching your phone.

Search from anywhere

There’s no need to leave your current app to search for the info or app you need next. Google Assistant uses what’s on your screen to show you related info and to suggest next steps. For example, when composing a text to invite a friend to a particular restaurant, see an info card about the restaurant (hours, ratings, distance away) and actions (open apps to navigate there or to view the menu).

Search history must be turned on to use this feature.

To search from anywhere, touch & hold .

To get information about something on your screen:

  1. Touch & hold . Then touch What's on my screen?. Try it when you're adding a new contact, or listening to a song, or reading an article.

    You'll see cards overlaying the current app.

  2. Touch a card to see search results for the card's phrase. Or touch the options at the bottom of a card to open other related apps.

Search from Gboard

When you're typing with the onscreen keyboard:

  1. Touch above the keys.
  2. Start typing a term in the search bar.
  3. Touch a result to share its link, or touch one of the additional suggested searches for more information.

If you don't see on your keyboard:

  1. Go to Settings > Languages & input > Virtual keyboard.
  2. Touch Google Keyboard > Search.
  3. Turn Show "Search and more" button on .

Limit what gets searched

  1. Touch > Google.
  2. Touch > Settings.
  3. Touch Personal.
  4. Use checkboxes to include or exclude types of content.

Use SafeSearch

To help prevent adult content from appearing in your search results:

  1. Touch > Google.
  2. Touch > Settings.
  3. Touch Accounts & privacy.
  4. Turn on SafeSearch filter.
