Manage SD card

You can move media from internal phone storage to your SD card, easily remove the card to transfer content to other devices, view the storage space available, and erase all content to start fresh. If you need extra security, you can also encrypt your SD card so that its content cannot be viewed on other devices.

Move media

To move media to your SD card and free up your phone's internal storage:

  1. Be sure you've inserted your SD card.
  2. Go to Settings > Storage.
  3. Touch Move media.
  4. Check the boxes for types of media to move (pictures, movies, music).
  5. Touch Move.
TipYou can set the camera to store all new photos and videos on the SD card.

Remove SD card

Drag the SD card notification down, and touch Eject.

If you don't see the notification:

  1. Go to Settings > Storage.
  2. Touch Unmount SD card.

It's now safe to remove the card from the phone.

To insert the card into another device (computer, projector, etc.), you may need the adapter that came with your card. See device manufacturer's instructions for the type of adapter required and insertion instructions.

Erase SD card

  1. Go to Settings > Storage.
  2. Touch Erase SD card.
  3. Confirm your PIN or Password.
  4. Touch Erase everything.

Encrypt SD card

Before you begin, consider that:

  • Only future files will be encrypted. Existing files are not.
  • Files on your SD card will only be viewable on this device, and you will not be able to access them if you move your SD card to another device.
  • You will not be able to decrypt the files in order to view them on another device when moving your SD card.

To encrypt your SD card:

  1. Go to Settings > Security.
  2. Touch Encrypt SD card.
  3. If prompted, change your screen lock to PIN or Password.
